In the business of life, it is important to know that you’re making progress. Things get busy, to-do lists are left in the dust of the hustle, and you are pulled twelve directions at once. Mastering the day means knowing where your time is spent, and there’s no better way to do that than to track it.
Why add one more ‘thing’ to the proverbial list, you may ask. After all, your day is full to bursting as it is. Or is it? Here are a few reasons why you should consider tracking your minutes and hours:
- Knowing where your time is spent is crucial to spending it wisely. Initially, this may sound like a chicken-before-the-egg situation, but really there is one that comes before the other. The ability to track and manage where your hours are going each day provides a way to forecast and plan. Not only that, but if you have tracked your hours, you can then determine if the projects that really need your attention are the ones receiving the most time.
- Have a way to display your hard work in hours and minutes. R.E.S.P.E.C.T. When you have it, you feel better. Being able to give your employer or colleagues a visual representation of all of the hours that you have put in towards a project or goal fuels the understanding that you really are a great employee. Also? Bragging rights.
- Give yourself the ability to make adjustments where necessary. There is something to be said for those successful people that continually evaluate their position, and make the necessary adjustments to continue in the direction they choose. Basic research shows us that if we are off by even one degree in our direction, if an adjustment is not made to bring us back to our desired course, we will eventually end up far to the left or right. By taking the initiative up front, tracking your hours, and making adjustments where they are needed, you are ensuring that your future stays on track. That’s a pretty solid win.
